Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, requested access to a government jet earlier this year in order to take his wife on a honeymoon to Europe at the expense of taxpayers.
Mnuchin is currently under investigation by the Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General in relation to his plans to charter a government jet for his honeymoon to take his wife, Louise Linton, to Scotland, France and Italy. The U.S. Air Force jet that Mnuchin requested, reportedly cost about $25,000 an hour to operate.
According to a spokesperson for the Treasury Department, Mnuchin only requested the jet to ensure that he had secure line of communication, but upon discovering other means to securely communicate, he dropped his initial request.
“The Secretary is a member of the National Security Council and has responsibility for the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence,” said the spokesman. “It is imperative that he have access to secure communications, and it is our practice to consider a wide range of options to ensure he has these capabilities during his travel, including the possible use of military aircraft.”
The Treasury Secretary is currently already in the hot-seat, facing an inquiry for a previous trip, during which, he and Linton ventured to Fort Knox during the time of the eclipse this summer, as Mnuchin prepared to discuss tax policy with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. The trip lead to concerns that Mnuchin used government resources to view the event.
