Roy Moore’s Defenders Compare Him to Joseph and Mary. This Priest’s Response is Everything

Many top Republicans have said that if Alabama Republican Roy Moore did initiate sexual contact with underage girls when he was in his 30’s, he should end his campaign for Senate.

Some Alabama politicians have stood by the Christian theocrat, saying the Washington Post’s report on a woman who Moore touched inappropriately when she was 14 came forward is either fake or doesn’t show Moore did anything wrong.

Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler said the Moore story was “much ado about very little” and invoked the Bible to defend the controversial Christian conservative Senate candidate.

“Take the Bible. Zachariah and Elizabeth for instance. Zachariah was extremely old to marry Elizabeth and they became the parents of John the Baptist,” Zeigler said. “Also take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.”

Given Moore’s own questionable interpretations of the Bible in his past judicial roles, Zeigler’s response is fitting — if only because of how outlandish and incorrect it is.

A Jesuit priest, writer and consultant to the Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications appointed by the pope, James Martin, challenged Zeigler’s statement seemingly justifying Moore’s behavior, noting that it was not theologically sound.

“For the biblically challenged: 1) Despite artistic representations, we have no idea about the exact ages of either the Virgin Mary or St. Joseph at the time of their betrothal or marriage. 2) Comparing the allegations against Roy Moore in any way to Joseph and Mary is disgusting,” Martin tweeted in response.
