Diddy wants to buy an NFL team and sign Kaepernick as quarterback

The current owner of the Carolina Panthers NFL franchise has announced he will sell the team at the end of the current season — and some interesting names are throwing their hats into the ring as potential buyers.

Owner Jerry Richardson, who is under investigation for workplace misconduct, published a letter on the Panthers’ website saying he would sell the team, following a Sports Illustrated report that at least four employees had reached settlements with the team regarding instances of inappropriate behavior.

ESPN has also reported that this is not the first time Richardson has come under fire for his behavior, which includes comments about women’s appearances, sexual advances and inappropriate touching of female employees.

Noting the lack of diversity among the largely white, male NFL owners (the Shahid Khan of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kim Pegula of the Buffalo Bills being the exception), rapper and music mogul Diddy announced he was interested in purchasing the Panthers.

“I would like to buy the @Panthers. Spread the word. Retweet!” Diddy tweeted on Sunday.

Diddy has long expressed a desire to own a sports franchise — he once almost purchased the Los Angeles Clippers — especially an NFL team.

“I did have a dream to own a NFL team but now my dream is to own our own league!” he once tweeted. “A league where you can be yourself. Have a retirement plan. Have freedom to be a great human and protest for your people without being demonized for your beliefs as a KING!!”

Diddy also once met with NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who led the movement to kneel in protest of racial inequality during the national anthem, praising the player who has been unable to find a new contract since being cut last year. Many believe this is because of his high profile as an activist.

Diddy said he intends to sign Kaepernick as the team’s quarterback, but Kaepernick said he wants in on the investment.

A number of other high profile current and former black athletes weighed in as well:
