Bible-school teacher arrested on child porn charges involving toddlers

A former volunteer Bible school teacher in Virgina has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to child pornography charges.

Gerald Lee Porter, 71, had taught Bible school at River Oak Church in Great Bridge, VA until his arrest this year. He pled guilty in August to one count of receipt of child pornography after investigations by three law enforcement agencies pointed to illegal images from a computer linked to Porter in 2016, the Virginia Pilot reported.

During separate investigations by the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, a task force officer with Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI, pornographic images of children — including toddlers — found on a peer-to-peer file sharing network all led back to Porter. When Porter was confronted earlier this year, he said the images came from a hard drive that he received from a coworker several years ago.

But one day after making that claim, Porter copped to owning the collection of hundreds of images and videos depicting child pornography, which he had collected since 2004.

Porter’s reasoning for collecting the images was strange, to say the least.

Porter noted that he had his prostate removed a decade ago, and the subsequent inability to be intimate with his wife, led to a “predilection towards pornography in the first place,” his attorney said.

“I am definitely a broken man,” Porter stated during a court appearance, apologizing to both his family and his “church family.” “I have offended God.”

The U.S. District judge who handed down the sentence, Judge Raymond Jackson, said that a report provided by a doctor claiming Porter was unlikely to re-offend was “not credible.”

In addition to his prison term, Porter has been ordered to pay $50,000 in fines and court fees.
