The 9 most insane photos of California’s wildfires

Wildfires have raged across eight counties in northern California since Sunday night, causing at least one fatality as well as significant damage to homes and commercial buildings.

At least 20,000 residents have been evacuated from the area, officials said, as firefighters battled the wind-whipped infernos across California’s Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Nevada, Butte, Mendocino, Yuba and Calaveras counties. Officials anticipate more fatalities and injuries as at least 15 blazes rage on in the region.

Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in several counties, saying that critical infrastructure and homes have been damaged. Local hospitals have rushed to evacuate patients as the fires approach. Meteorologists have noted the immense amount of smoke issuing from the wildfires is showing up on their radar and imaging systems in much the same way a rain cloud would.

Images coming from social media and official channels depict widespread devastation, as residents flee the fires, which have consumed almost 57,000 acres so far, including entire neighborhoods.

Take a look at some of the images from the fires and resulting damage below:

Video from the scenes of some of the fires are equally jaw-dropping. The footage depicts the blazes as well as immense smoke coverage in the region as residents evacuate. In addition to the many homes and businesses, Disneyland was also evacuated as a result.
